Proper SEO Takes Time

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

A common misconception is that you can go from the fifth page of Google (for example) to the first page simply by hiring a search engine optimization firm.  This is not true for more competitive keywords.  The correct methods of SEO will usually have you start increasing your rank immediately, but obtaining first page rank overnight in a competitive niche shouldn’t be something you are after.  While a company may in fact be able to do this, the ranking probably will not last.  Google will spot or eventually spot an unnatural increase in your site’s links.  This initial surge may push you higher immediately, but the bottom will fall out when your site all of a sudden isn’t popular anymore.  The abnormality will raise red flags and you will be summarily dropped in the search engines.  The best case scenario after this happens is you apply for reinstatement to Google and they allow your site back in the search.  This is not to say SEO takes a year or more.  2 months is sufficient time to accummulate a natural, significant lift in the search engine ranks.

Make sure to ask your company what specifically their plan is.  Also, be sure to get specifics from the seo firm on how exactly they plan to maintain your rank in Google search and how active they will be.  As I have documented before, many companies charge a maintenance fee yet do nothing to actually maintain your site.  Inquire about this.

How Much is “Maintenance” Costing You?

Many website designers and seo websites quietly include a maintenance fee in their final prices, but what exactly does maintenance give you?  Usually, the only benefit to you is your website is hosted on that person’s server.  Typically, a server’s cost is about $10/month.  Unless your website is extremely well trafficked, your server should cost no more than $15.  Visit San Antonio SEO for a local company which does not charge continual fees to “maintain your website.”

SEO Fluff

Be on the lookout for web design companies that claim to “search engine optimize” your website while proferring catch phrases that may sound foreign or complex to you.  Some will claim to optimize your meta tags or have Google analytics installed.  Others will submit your websites to the top search engines “Google, Yahoo, and MSN.”  This is all peripheral stuff.  By that I mean, yes these are some things you can do that are related to SEO in a sense, but they really offer little in the way of moving your website up in the search engine rankings.  Meta tags can be added to your website in a matter of seconds.  That said, the usefulness of meta tags is considered very weak according to many SEO experts and certainly doesn’t contain anymore than 1% of your SEO juice.  Submitting your website is something you can do in a matter of seconds as well.  Just type in “submit my site” into your search engine of choice and fill in your URL and that’s done.  Of course, you could always just wait and 9 times out of 10, it will happen naturally.  Google Analytics is nothing more than a free traffic tracker that tells you how many visitors you get and where they came from.  There is a little more to it, but that’s the essential relevance.  This can be installed in 3-4 minutes if you have a Google account.

These items don’t get to the heart of SEO.  If a website is coming out with these items right off the bat chances are they don’t know what the hell they are doing as far as search engine optimization goes and they only want to charge you more for doing a couple of minute operations.

Research Your SEO Firm

As you can see from a quick Google search, there are many SEO companies to choose from.  It is a good idea to contact several before making your choice.  Price, ethics, and knowledge are three good reasons to do so.  Take a sampling away from each and determine which website leaves you feeling the most at ease with your decision.  Be on the lookout for “sure” guarantees and very quick turnarounds on search results.  You should also know that some SEO methods can skyrocket your website in the beginning, but leave you banned later.  Natural, organic rank through ethical SEO is the best way for your website to gain high search position.
